ASCHA | Association of Scholars of Christianity in the History of Art

A B O U T

The Association of Scholars of Christianity in the History of Art (ASCHA) is dedicated to facilitating and promoting new scholarship examining the relations between the visual arts and Christianity across its many social, historical, material, and theological dimensions. Founded in 2010, ASCHA (pronounced “AH-shah”) seeks to contribute to the study of art history by creating opportunities for the presentation and publication of new scholarship. Through annual events and publication projects, the association provides a forum for the advancement of research, dialogue, collaboration, and publication in the study of Christianity within the visual arts.

ASCHA is international, nonpartisan, and ecumenical. We invite the participation of scholars of any or no personal faith commitments, and we encourage the critical study of Christianity across its wide diversity of time periods, geographical locations, and world cultures. ASCHA is dedicated to establishing and upholding professional standards of scholarship and education in this field through the development and practice of rigorous scholarly methodologies and the open and respectful exchange of knowledge and ideas among scholars. As an association, we strive to create a generous and hospitable space for a wide range of scholarship in this field.

The Association of Scholars of Christianity in the History of Art (ASCHA) is an affiliated society of CAA (College Art Association) and hosts a session in the annual CAA conference. In addition, ASCHA hosts semi-regular symposia and publishes edited volumes—we have several things currently in the works, so stay tuned for forthcoming news on each of these fronts and for our Calls for Paper Proposals.
